just came back from an event specially for children that lived on the street, under the bridge (kolong jembatan). Children aged range from primary school age up to my age.. 20s.. Poor children that dont have the opportunity to go to school, who has been abandoned by their parents... beg, steal, rob "nodong" to live.. (thats where their income comes from), dont have place to live... so they sleep on the side of the street.. (if you havent been to indo, there are a lot of children sleeps on the side of street.. and the streets are not exactly clean.. they're in fact, very perdy merdy berdy DIRTY! (even the place where they hold the event, was surrounded with hundreds of flies!!) (so don't compare with Australia's streets)
This event was organised by a christian organisation and I learnt their method in reachin out to them, by showing love and example. First was public method - Obviously they can't publicly say Jesus... 3 times in a year, they have something like mini RICE, normally located under the bridge, and in their talk, they changed Jesus to God.... they taught them Christian wisdom through skits, talks, songs etc. oh and of course free food in the end....and Second, they also have personal approach method - where volunteer goes to where they hang out, and randomly talk to them, ask for their names, what year are they, if they need help with their homework... and if they say yes, they meet in regular basis, share their knowledge, food etc etc with them. if not, or if they dont go to school, keep hanging out with them in regular basis, share your life with them. Third, through adoption, they offering kids that are willing to be changed, a place to live, free schooling, food, etc. basically to be adopted by the organisation... giving them opportunity to study, and work.. and if they do this, they're not allowed to be back on the street, asking/beg people for money/steal/ etc etc....
surprisingly, not many people willing to do the 3rd stepp.. trust issues.. and confidence issues. they (street children) think themselves as rubbish & unworthy of anything and why would anyone willing to help them for nothing in return??
Anyway, how can then the gospel being preach? through personal testimonies... through love and things that they (volunteers& committeeS) do, children got to know Christ. 90% of adopted children came to know Christ. =) It's great to see how God works in different country, different ministry... above all, it's still the same one God that changes people heart...
The event that I went today was just a celebration more than anything...(for primary aged) I would love to get the chance to talk to them but I only got to know the people that involved and learnt about them and their ministry. and it really open my eyes, how blessed we are who stayed in proper house, eat proper food, opportunity to learn (school).. and make me think "how can we that has been given so muchh by God, contribute in building His Kingdom??" hmmmmmmmmmm
From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one
who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked. Luke 12"48b
